I hate it when movies with great trailers get bad reviews. The heavyweights haven't weighed in yet, so I'm hoping the film bloggers are wrong about Lust, Caution (same with Elizabeth: The Golden Age). Even if they're not, though, at least we can enjoy the previews, right?

A friend of mine traveled the Indian Himalayas. He said that by the sides of the roads there are signs letting you know that the government department in charge of road maintenance "is praying for your safety."

This is like when I traveled from Bilbao in northern Spain to Toulouse in the south of France. There were all these terrifying cliffs that we drove near, but somehow, just because I was on a bus with so many others and I knew that countless people had traveled it before, I wasn't as scared as you'd expect. You probably don't get so much of that feeling driving in the Himalayas though.

My friend Amneris's family lives in Tampa but this still made me think of her. I actually really want to go to Miami, which is ironic: I didn't back when it was the place to party, but once I saw shows like Nip/Tuck and Dexter, I was riveted by how cool and noirish it could be.
Same with Los Angeles. What gets me about LA isn't the third-rate celebrities you run into (my brothers were really excited about having their picture taken with Marla Maples), but the fact that in a place that sunny and curated and manicured, you have gutter punks and goth kids and even the Fishers from Six Feet Under.
